Madras Aadi Andhra Aadi Vasi SAMKSHEMA SANGHAM MAASS has been renamed as Madras Aadi Andhra Arundhathiya Aadi Vasi SAMKSHEMA SANGHAM MAAASS
since 3.12.23.and registered under the Tamilnadu Societies act.

The founder of MAASS, Shri K.G Gopalkrishna was born on 13th January, 1942 as the eldest son among five children to Shri Ganganna and Smt Venkayamma in a predominantly dalit village called Kandi kuppa, in Ammalapuram Town, East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. He hailed from an extremely poor and impoverished background. Despite their financial constraints, the urge to break the cycle of poverty and fight caste discrimination was ingrained in his consciousness from an early age by his parents who put a premium on education of their children. His life as a young boy was mired in numerous instances of explicitly practiced caste bias in the various social, educational and cultural spheres in rural Andhra Pradesh. This constant discrimination, regressive social mores and subsequent disaffection and prejudice only strengthened his resolve to fight injustice against the disadvantaged and downtrodden sections of the society. His adult life was shaped largely by the social and moral consciousness brought about by Babasaheb’s philosophy of nurturing the power of Education in empowering the individuals of the Scheduled Caste and Tribal communities and transforming their collective social standing in society. The core values of Ambedkarism continued to resonate with him all his life and he dedicated his life in spreading the message of the ‘Father of Modern India’ Shri Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar to the masses.

On the personal front, he lost his father at the age of 16 and by virtue of being the eldest son of the family, was entrusted with the additional responsibility of raising three younger brothers and an elder sister alongwith an ailing mother. Despite the financial and social hardships, he managed to complete his graduation from PR College, Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh majoring in History and literature with distinction. Although he desired to pursue higher studies, the lack of any steady income and monetary support forced him to lookout for immediate employment to sustain his family. His first joined the Press bureau of India, Hyderabad followed by a couple of years at Accounts and Auditors Office. However, he was constantly driven by his aspiration for social change and to contribute to the welfare of his community. This yearning to be an agent for social change and commitment led him to prepare for the Civil Services Examination despite the lack of commensurate means. Surmounting social and financial hardships, he managed to successfully clear the Civil Services and was selected for the 1973 batch of Indian Police Services (IPS). He was subsequently allotted the Tamil Nadu cadre.

On the professional front, in the capacity of a bureaucrat, Shri KG Gopalkrishna served for 22 years in the Indian Police Services in the State of Tamil Nadu with distinction. Among many others, he served as ASP in Neyveli district, SP in Coimbatore, Trichy and Ramnathapuram Districts and DIG in Madurai Range and was serving as DIG, Chief Vigilance and Security Officer, Pallavan Transport Corporation, Chennai at the time of his untimely demise. He succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest on February 26, 1995 in Chennai at the age of 53 while in harness. He was scheduled to be promoted as Inspector General of Police (IG) in a few weeks prior to his death. He is survived by his wife Smt.Ambuja and three children. His eldest daughter is an IPS officer, allotted to Rajasthan Cadre, the younger daughter is a Phd Scholar and the son is working as an Undersecretary in the Parliament of India.

On the social front, Shri KG Gopalkrishna never shied away from wearing his identity as a dalit on his sleeve. His simplicity, modesty, intellect, selflessness and accessibility to his community endeared him to all and one of the reasons as to why he is fondly remembered by one and all among his community in Chennai even today. He never let his tedious professional commitments come in the way of his desire to uplift his fellow brethren from his community. While working in Chennai, he sensed that a large number of Telugu speaking dalits were residing in Chennai for reasons of employment and had eventually settled there. Further, hailing from Andhra himself and working in Tamil Nadu, he sensed the bonhomie and longed for establishing ones own community based network at Chennai for such dalit families. It was during those circumstances, that he came about this idea of providing an umbrella organisation to reach out to such dalit families in Madras. In pursuance thereto, he managed to establish bonds with others by galvanising and strengthening links with other Telugu speaking dalits by reaching out to them through social forums and interpersonal engagements. These interactions took a formal shape eventually and resulted in the establishment of an organisation for the welfare of AdiAndhras and AdiDravidas in Madras and thus the name, MAASS came into existence in 1992. Under his able leadership and guidance and the unwavering support of his colleagues, they embarked regularly on slum visits to disadvantaged dalit areas in and around Chennai and its suburbs to empower them about their rights and responsibilities, organise seminars on Ambedkar’s vision and apprise them of various job opportunities and also involve them in entrepreneurship activities and capacity building. These activities, as of today, have grown manifold and continue unabated with renewed vigour, as we approach 28 years of its existence, under a dedicated team of Office bearers who have resolved to carry on Shri KGK’s vision for the Scheduled Caste community.
